AUSTIN CHRONICLE

RECOMMENDED: DARIN MURPHY, SHANE BARTELL
La Zona Rosa, Saturday 8

Darin Murphy is clearly enrolled in the John Lennon/Lou Reed songwriting school - pretty chords, sharp lyrics, tough rhythms. Better yet, this former star of the Houston college circuit (with sister Trish, a fine pop artist in her own right) is ready to graduate, since his 1999 debut, Solitarium, could be his senior thesis. Traces of Bowie and Stone Roses accent a certain psychedelic flair, but then the next minute he's all bluesy and Jay Farrar. At any rate, Murphy is a big reason (along with Trish, Goudie, Kissinger and others) why Austin's limey-loving power pop community has plenty to be giddy about.
